Practice Cryptography!

Even with all of the cryptologic and cryptographic technology that has existed in the world for the past 60 years, we still don't really know what encryption is good for or how to use it -- or, more importantly, why it's important. Maybe it's time for people and coders to actually start practicing how to use it, like any other skill.

Why DRM is hurting the causes of those who insist on it...

DRM hurts the causes of the RIAA and the MPAA.  The reason is less apparent than you might think... and no, it's not because it pisses off consumers.

DRM hurts the "get paid for copies" causes of the RIAA and the MPAA because it ensures that copies that are made are less detectable.  Remember that computers are adept at precise recognition of exact bit sequences.  When copies are made from DRM'ed materials, the bit sequences are necessarily variant -- the DRM, if it can be said to be "unbroken", cannot allow the precise bit sequence to be decrypted.

If the MPAA and the RIAA wanted to be smart, they would drop DRM and publish unprotected works -- and then come down like a ton of bricks on anywhere that published unpaid copies.
